Observation Week - Journal 1
During this period of time, I went to
observe my cooperator teachers in their classrooms. On the first day, I observed
teacher Doris from second grade. She was very happy when she knew there was
going to be a teacher-student of English helping her during the semester. So
when I entered the classroom all the students were staring at me, they were
curious about who I was. Teacher Doris told them I was going to be their
teacher of English for a while, the majority of them were happy. After
introducing myself, the teacher started with the class. What I could observe
during the class was that first, the students’ behavior seemed good only a
couple of them were kind of rude with their classmates. Second, the teacher’s
behavior and knowledge, she is most of the time patient with the kids but she
is very strict. However, she is not competent in English, at all. So I knew
that I will have to start with them from the very basics when English classes
start. Moreover, related to the class activity, what the teacher did was a
simple and boring short text translation on the board. Neither the teacher nor
the students knew exactly what the text says and many times, the teacher
asked for my help. Finally, she ended the activity giving the pronunciation of
some words but then again, as I was there, she asked me a couple of times if it
was good so that if she was not I could say the correct pronunciation.
The next day, I observed the third graders. The teacher in charge is Yineth Murcia.
When the class started, I could notice many things that caught my attention from
this group and their teacher. First, the students’ behavior was a bit energetic
and talkative but they did have some knowledge about English and they worked
well in the activities the teacher gave them, so that was good. Second, the
teacher’s behavior was patient but very strict and what I liked the most was
that she knew something about English. Although her knowledge is not that
advanced she has some idea about certain topics and she is able to explain
them appropriately. Moreover, class activity was good. Simple but enough
for an hour of class. Students had to draw objects using numbers from 11 to 20.
The majority of them worked well and I enjoyed observing them do the activity.
To
conclude, the observation week was very enriching for me because I could realize
about many things related to the students’ attitudes, behaviors, atmosphere and
other things that are important for a student-teacher when doing his or her
practicum. With this information, I can
help myself to look for strategies and/or activities that suit the necessities
of the kids.
