What Makes a Good Teacher?

Teaching is one of the most complicated jobs today. Simply because it demands broad knowledge of the subject matter, curriculum, and standards as well as enthusiasm, a caring attitude, and a love of learning and a couple of other important things like the desire to make a difference in the lives of young people that will help them to be better every day. But if we pay attention, all these qualities required, it’s no wonder why it’s hard to find great teachers.
However, let's talk about those characteristics that, in my opinion, make very good teachers. Good teachers expect that all students can and will achieve in their classroom, and they don’t give up on underachievers. This is very important because the majority of students tend to lose motivation easily but if the teacher encourages them they'll keep improving. Moreover, good teachers are prepared and organized. They are in their classrooms early and ready to teach. They present lessons in a clear and structured way. This is something that I need to improve because I tend to not pay much attention to it because I usually miss track of time and do things at the last minute. Finally, one of the characteristics I consider the most important is: good teachers are masters of their subject matter. They exhibit expertise in the subjects they are teaching and spend time continuing to gain new knowledge in their field. These qualities are not acquired for the first time, they need to be improved little by little and working very hard.

  2. I think it is important, as you say, to keep gaining knowledge in the field. But, also let's consider that it is difficult for teachers, especially in Colombia to do this. Basically, because teaching is one of the most underpaid jobs that people with University education have. Also, in order to keep gaining knowledge in the field it is important to keep updating the knowledge through a masters or a doctorate degree, but this is difficult because not all the teachers have the money to pay for it, and if you do you will keep paying for that credit for the rest of their lives.
